secrets and memories

Last weekend was what Brits call a bank holiday weekend. It's one of those weekends attached to a monday holiday leaving you with more time to mess about I suppose. Unfortunately, weather not permitting, we woke up to the gloomiest Saturday we've had for weeks and Sunday wasn't better as it came accompanied by gale force winds. I was even thinking walking home from work Saturday night if anybody got hurt yet with all the flying debris. Only good thing about the strong winds was it reminded me nostalgically of past cyclones in the Phils. Weird. Yes, I know. whoever did you find being whimsical over a wind storm?

So cooped up in Governess Storm, I was; and going through my now highly diminished tv video tapes, I find a tape of the film Brokeback Mountain. As hubby was wrapped up in his DIY, I settled in and started watching, what would be a story that left me tearful each time I think about it now. After the film, I googled and wiki-ed the film and found that it was extremely compared to another tragic love story, The Titanic, however, Brokeback touched a nerve that Titanic did not. To compare the two films is a bit unfair, as they both have their own plot lines and tales to tell.

With Brokeback, I related so much to the injustice of an intolerant society. The fear of cruelty and retribution for being who you are, stopped the two male protagonists from pursuing a life together. What a tragedy!!! It's heartbreaking how both men had to pretend and live their lives as a lie, so they may steer attention away from their real emotional inclinations. I agree with comments made of the film, that both men not be classed as gay or bisexual. To me, they are but two souls, meant to be together, to love each other. The crime is that social preconceptions back then created the hesitation, that made Ennis falter.

This story of Ennis and Jack ended in tragedy, but that's the whole point of the story, the tragedy of true love lost. If you have'nt seen it yet, watch it. The film was also called, The Secrets of Brokeback Mountain and another title Memories of Brokeback Mountain. The quiet, sweeping shots of the mountains of Alberta where it was shot was amazing, so was the two actors who played the main characters. No questions here why it was so critically acclaimed. Only exclamation point for me was it lost the Oscar to Crash, even though a very good film as well, I choose Brokeback on sentimental value. A film like this will not come to pass again, not in a while. And I will watch it just to see again the part where Ennis finds his bloodied shirt hung inside Jack's shirt. The relevance: both men were wearing said clothing on their last day on Brokeback Mountain. Then years later, as Ennis hangs the forgotten sweater of his daughter in his closet, he opens the closet door to show his bloodied shirt, now hung on top of Jack's shirt as if hugging it. Then he says those heartbreaking words as he straightened a postcard of Brokeback Mountain... Ennis says "Jack, I swear..."

... You don't bring me flowers
You don't sing me love songs
You hardly talk to me anymore
When you come through that door at the end of the day...
I remember when you couldn't wait to love me
Used to hate to leave me
Now after loving me late at night
When it's good for you, babe
And you're feeling all right
When you just roll over and turn out the light...
And you don't bring me flowers anymore
It used to be so natural
It used to be...

pride and prejudice

A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony, in a moment... chapter 6, Pride and Prejudice.

The classic tale of love and misunderstanding unfolds in class-conscious England near the close of the 18th century. The five Bennet sisters – Elizabeth, or Lizzie (Keira Knightley), Jane (Rosamund Pike), Lydia , Mary and Kitty – have been raised well aware of their mother’s fixation on finding them husbands and securing set futures. The spirited and intelligent Elizabeth, however, strives to live her life with a broader perspective, as encouraged by her doting father (Donald Sutherland).

When wealthy bachelor Mr. Bingley takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man’s sophisticated circle of London friends and the influx of young militia officers, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. Eldest daughter Jane, serene and beautiful, seems poised to win Mr. Bingley’s heart. For her part, Lizzie meet with the handsome and – it would seem – snobbish Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), and the battle of the sexes is joined.Their encounters are frequent and spirited yet far from encouraging. Lizzie finds herself even less inclined to accept a marriage proposal from a distant cousin, Mr. Collins (Tom Hollander), and – supported by her father – stuns her mother and Mr. Collins by declining. When the heretofore good-natured Mr. Bingley abruptly departs for London, devastating Jane, Lizzie holds Mr. Darcy culpable for contributing to the heartbreak. But a crisis involving youngest sister Lydia soon opens Lizzie’s eyes to the true nature of her relationship with Mr. Darcy.

The ensuing rush of feelings leaves no one unchanged, and inspires the Bennets and everyone around them to reaffirm what is most important in life.
123
Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well known to each other or ever so similar beforehand, it does not advance their felicity in the least. They always continue to grow sufficiently unlike afterwards to have their share of vexation; and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life.
